Don and Keiko’s story
I am originally from Kobe-City, Japan. I came to New Mexico in 1995 to attend UNM originally intending to return to Japan and teach English and Japanese literature. While here I began my family and now have 3 beautiful girls. Eventually I began working at a national corporate duplication company and began my introduction into printing and management. Today my Husband and I own and operate Valliant Printing. I began working there in 2006 and within a few months the owner wanted my help in turning it into a profitable business. I told him to give me 3 months – but let me do what I have to without interference. He took my advice and was very successful – although that meant he now wanted to sell and had offers that all included taking over the accounts and getting rid of the name. In order to keep the name Valliant (and to keep everybody’s job!) my husband and I quickly came up with a business plan and made a proposal that the business be sold to us. After some negotiating we came up with a plan that would allow the previous owner to fund his retirement and allow us to carry on the now 98 year old business. We also got married inside the shop and the previous owner of the company gave me away at my wedding.
